THE LOVE STORY OF HELOISE & PETER ABELARD
This love story is not only famous in Europe, but also in almost the whole world. Forget the fictional story between Romeo and Juliet by the famous artist named William Shakespeare. That's because the original love story that happened to Peter Abelard (Petrus Abelardus) and Heloise was no less tragic.
According to the ThoughtCo page, Abelard is a philosopher and clergyman from France. He was born in the region of Nantes, more precisely in the village of Le Pallet in 1079. Some historical records state that Abelard was one of the theologians and writers who were sharpest and dared to express freedom in human rights in his time.
Because Abelard was quite a respected and respected figure, he had many students. Naturally, Abelard became one of the philosophers who are very intelligent and can assemble the principles of science into religious dogmas. One of Abelard's students was a girl named Heloise d'Argenteuil who was the niece and pride of the ruling figure at the time, Fulbert (Fulbertus).
In short, Abelard and Heloise became lovers even though they were 22 years apart--Abelard was older. When Heloise's uncle found out about the relationship, he separated the two. The two couples ran away and married secretly. However, their secret marriage was finally caught by the public and Heloise's uncle.
Because Abelard felt Heloise was in danger, he sent his wife to a convent to disguise herself as a nun. Fulbertus in his power immediately ordered several people to torture and castrate Abelard. After Abelard was tortured and castrated, he decided to become a monk at the Monastery of Saint Dionysius, Paris. In subsequent times, Abelard continued to serve as a monk in various monasteries in France. He was forced to become a monk until his death in 1142.
How about Heloise? No less sad than Abelard, Heloise was forced to become a nun because her love story was really condemned by many people at that time. At the time of Abelard's death, his body was secretly delivered to Heloise. It is said that Heloise cared for Abelard's remains and secret tomb until his death in 1163. In the end, their bones were buried next to each other in Pere Lachaise Cemetery, Paris.
